Thunder Yuzu Gummies are the pack you grab at the register without thinking. Each piece is a fat, cloud-shaped gummy the color of a ripe yuzu, dusted in a fine sour powder that catches the light. Bite through and there's a bright, floral hit of citrus — the peel, not just the juice — followed by a crackling burst as the popping-candy core goes off against your teeth.

The texture is the surprise: the gummy is softer than it looks, a Japanese-style chew that gives way rather than fights back, so the crackle in the center feels louder by contrast. The sourness is loud for about two seconds and then rounds off into honeyed sweetness, which is exactly why nobody stops at one.

The maker, a small Kochi factory that started out pressing yuzu juice for ponzu, claims every bag uses the peel of three whole fruit. Whether or not that's true, the smell when you tear the bag open is unmistakably real yuzu.

The maker

Made by Tosa Kaminari Seika, a family yuzu-pressing works in the Monobe valley of Kochi that started tumbling leftover peel into gummies in the late 2000s. The popping core was a mistake — a batch of ramune powder got mixed in — that customers refused to let them fix.
